The demand for EPC general contractors is growing by the day. If you’re looking for a good general contractor for your project, do not miss this article. It is a summary of the information that helps you to know about EPC general contractor, such as definitions, selection criteria, and EPC general contractors’ rights and obligations.

What is an EPC General Contractor?

For those who are unfamiliar with the acronym EPC, it stands for three English words: Engineering, Procurement, and Construction. Among these:

  • Engineering refers to work designing
  • Procurement refers to the procurement and supply of technology equipment or supplies
  • Construction refers to the construction of works.

As a result, we can define an EPC general contractor as a contractor who performs all design, technology equipment supply, and construction work. In contrast to the turnkey general contractor, the EPC general contractor does not participate in the development of the construction investment project.

The investor in a project can sign a contract with one or more main contractors. The contractor who wins the EPC package can perform all stages on his own or hire subcontractors to complete various aspects of the project. If the EPC general contractor signs contracts with subcontractors, these subcontractors must be approved by the Investor. The EPC contractor must be accountable to the investor for the progress and quality of the signed works, including subcontractor work.

EPC general contractor requirements

The EPC general contractors must be fully capable of practicing and operating in accordance with investment and construction law, specifically:

  • Having registered as a business in accordance with the bidding package’s contents

A joint venture agreement is required if the contractor is a joint venture organization. In this case, a contractor will represent the joint venture with mutual responsibility and must agree to complete the work assigned to the contractors. In accordance with the assigned work content, each contractor in the joint venture must also have a business registration.

  • Having sufficient experience and conditions to complete the work under the EPC contract, including:
    • Design experience;
    • Ability and experience to work as a contractor on projects and bidding packages of comparable size and complexity;
    • Focal units in design consultancy, processing, manufacturing, material and equipment supply, and construction
