Currently, the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien railway construction project is being implemented by the investor. This is Line 1 of Ho Chi Minh City’s urban railway system. The Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien line is also the first Metro line which located in accordance with Ho Chi Minh City’s urban planning.

On June 1, 2019, the HCM City Urban Railway Project Management Board began construction activities. On June 1, 2022, the project is planned to begin commercial operations. The operation and maintenance support is expected to be completed in 2026. The project is 19.7 kilometers long in total. Line 1 comprises a 2.6-kilometer underground portion with three stations and a 17.1-kilometer elevated portion with 11 stations.

Finance for projects

The overall investment in the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien railway construction project is estimated to be 17.388 billion VND in 2009. The overall investment, however, grew to 47,325 billion VND after calculating and redefining. Nevertheless, as of 2011, the National Assembly had not approved this project. This resulted in a debt issue and slowed project progress from 2017 to 2019.

The Politburo authorized the document to modify the overall investment capital at the beginning of 2019. The authorities of Ho Chi Minh City then agreed to the adjustment of the investment capital at the end of 2019. As a result, following another review, the investment capital was decreased to 43,600 billion VND. Despite the fact that the capital amount was decreased by 3,400 billion VND, all goods were guaranteed to match the design volume.

The electric train model

The Urban Railway Management Board decided on the color blue for the train’s exterior after considering all of the opinions. This color, according to the Management Board, portrays a modern, fresh, and environmentally friendly image. The train is equipped with a radio control system as well as an automatic train tracking system. Ascertain that the train is being operated in accordance with the automated system.

With a standing passenger density of 8 passengers per m², the tram on railway line 1 can accommodate up to 930 passengers. Handrails, grab hooks, and positions and assistive devices for individuals with impairments are all included in the train’s interior.

Route of Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien line

The Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien railway line project has a specific route, which is as follows: The line runs from Ben Thanh (Quoc Thi Trang Square) to Depot Long Binh, passing through Le Loi, Nguyen Sieu, Ngo Van Nam, Ton streets, Duc Thang; Ba Son station, Nguyen Huu Canh, along Van Thanh canal, Dien Bien Phu; the Saigon Bridge, and the Hanoi Highway; and ending at Depot Long Binh.

In addition, this route will be expanded from Suoi Tien station to Binh Duong, Bien Hoa, and Dong Nai in accordance with the future orientation.

Long Binh Depot

The depot is located in Thu Duc City’s Long Binh ward, which spans 27.4 hectares. Until 2040, this will be the control and maintenance center. Operators and maintenance; a ship maintenance workshop; railroads, electrical systems, and communication signals; a ship parking lot; a ship sanitation station; an internal and external road network; and office space are among the infrastructure at the Depot.

Train schedule and speed of the Ben Thanh – Suoi Tien line

The train is expected to travel at the following speeds, depending on the route:

  • On the elevated portion: 110 km/h
  • Underground portion: 80 km/h
  • Station entrance area: 35 km/h
  • Station area: 25 km/h.
